Cross Country

Gary Fisher

Follow the Dog © is the first dedicated Cross Country mtb trail on Cannock Chase (and the first in
the Midlands). The Gary Fisher sponsored trail is around 7 miles long and is designed for intermediate
riders and above. The trail has been designed and built to make the most of the low elevation of the
area and sand/gravel tree lined terrain.

Novice rider are asked to use the leisure trails until they are confident enough to tackle the loose
surfaces and more technical sections. Faster riders have priority on the trail. If you are struggling
please step aside and give way to riders wishing to pass.

Follow the Dog is fully waymarked and starts and finishes at the shop.

Downhill

The Downhill area at Stile Cop is Cannock Chase’s only site dedicated to downhill riding.
There are two official courses currently at the site and a maze of unofficial trails.

The official trails start from the top of the fire road just off Stile Cop Road in Rugeley and are
free to use and are open all year round subject to closures for forestry operations and building /
maintenance sessions.

Leisure Trail

For leisure cyclists and families there are 3 leisure cycle trails on the Chase which are open
all year round and are free of charge.

The trails have been developed from the long-established family routes and comprise;

Birches Valley - A short route based around the Birches Valley visitor centre and Lady Hill Coppice.
Ideal for young children who are just getting to grips with riding their bike solo.

Fair Oak Pools - Extending the Birches Valley loop this trail circles the Fair Oak pools with an
option of returning to Birches Valley or continuing up to Marquis Drive

Sherbrook Valley - Taking the longer Fair Oak pools loop this trail continues through Sherbrook
Valley in the direction of Milford Common. This trail uses bridleways and forest fire roads but is
likely to be unsuitable for young children and very inexperienced riders ue to the loose surfaces
and climbing sections.

Thes trails are fully waymarked and maps are available to buy from the cycle centre and cafe
at Birches Valley.
